What is momme?

What is momme?

November 19, 2017

When you are contemplating whether or not to buy silk sheets, you probably run into an unfamiliar term – momme.

Momme… What is that?

The first thing that you notice is that when there’s an increase in momme, there’s an increase in price. But why?

Momme is Japanese form of weight measurement. Pronounced “moe-mie” and abbreviated as “mm,” momme expresses the weight (in pounds) of a piece of material sized 45 inches by 100 yards. For example, a 100 yard bolt of 19mm 45” silk would weigh 19 pounds.

So what does that really mean to the average person looking to buy silk sheets?

The easiest way to explain what momme means to a silk sheets buyer is to present an analogy.

Most people know that the quality of cotton sheets is measured by thread count. The higher the thread count, the higher the quality, which results in a higher price.

Similarly, the quality of pure silk sheets is measured by momme weight. Higher momme equals higher quality.

An increase in momme results in a heavier, stronger, more durable silk.Silk that is 17 momme or lower is considered lightweight and is typically used for delicate, gently-used items such as light blouses or summer scarves.

Creating high quality silk bedding is our mission. Light weight silk is less expensive but results in an inferior product. All silk bedding items from Celestial Silk are made from silk that is 19 momme or higher.

22 mm silk has almost 20% more silk per square inch than 19 mm does. This denser weave protects the luster and sheen that silk possess and results in stronger durability. It’s estimated that 22 mm pure silk sheets have almost double the life of lower momme weights.

All Celestial Silk products are made with high quality care and are created with Grade A 100% pure mulberry silk. Every silk sheet set and silk pillowcase is triple-checked for quality and imperfections.

19 mm pure silk sheets are the perfect blend of sophistication, durability, luxury and affordability. 19 mm silk sheets are made for daily use and routine laundering. With proper care, the luster, sheen and usability will last for a great length of time. Like our 22 mm silk sheets, our 19 mm silk sheets are seamless, resulting in uninterrupted smoothness and silkiness.

25 mm silk bedding is the epitome of luxury. With almost 30% more silk per square inch than 19 mm, 25 mm silk has the durability to last up to ten years with the proper care and laundering. Known for its elegance, 25 mm silk sheet sets are popular for wedding bedding, anniversary gift and engagement celebrations.

Regardless of the weight you choose, our naturally hypoallergenic silk sheet sets will provide you with the health benefits, beauty and sophistication that you’re looking for in luxury bedding.
